Moby Dick...the face of the future of Opera?

What was my favorite scene? What stood out the most? I felt stupid that I could not answer these questions. The entire production was outstanding. The voices were phenomenal and the staging, well, stupendous.

Last week I flew to San Francisco to see the Opera I had missed here in San Diego during the regular season. I had been privileged to attend a sitzprobe the night before my flight so I had some idea what I was missing. When I returned everyone was raving so I knew I had to see it.

I was a voracious reader as a teenager, but somewhat rebellious in my choices. Whatever some adult like a teacher or parent recommended I avoided like the plague. That is how I escaped never reading Moby Dick.

San Francisco's program is a slick heavier weight paper. The 2012-13 season begins in September in San Francisco and produces 9 operas ending June-July! I am envious but then consider the cost of a season ticket!

The set, designed by Robert Brill, was matched with Gavan Swift’s lighting designs to create a truly magical set. Digital projections created a virtual reality of stormy seas. This is the future of opera!

Singing the role of Ahab was Jay Hunter Morris who has a broad repertoire. Stephen Costello who met his wife Ailyn Perez onstage was Greenhorn. They were Romeo and Juliet in a past production here in San Diego. Morgan Smith was Starbuck. What a spectacular cast! Not a weak voice in the entire cast. I could spend hours listening to these spectacular Opera singers.
